Why is Pig iron called pig iron? Back in the day, raw iron was cast into a bed of sand. There was a groove pressed into the sand with depressions at right angles to it lined up on each side like piglets with a sow. it reminded the casting crew of a sow and her piglets, so, they called it pig iron
