disciplines that has been vital in the emergence of speech and language
therapy as an independent speciality. and the confidence of speech and
language therapy to take from the knowledge base of other disciplines without
being restricted by their limitations has marked the maturity of the speciality.
Therapists of stuttering have surely benefited most from the field of
behavioural psychiatry, They were among the first speech and language
therapists to recognize the need to assess the person with the speech
disorder and not only the speech symptoms. In 1862, with the publication
of 'Heilung des Stotterns', Klenke wrote of the need to treat the whole of a
stammerer's personality. Scripture studied the value of psychoanalytic
assessment for stammerers, and throughout the long history of interest in
this most ill-understood disorder lies a belief that assessment of the
speaker, not just the symptoms, is required.
But fewer therapists worked with aphasics, voice-disordered clients and
stutterers together, compared with the numbers of therapists working with
children. The way in which the assessment of children with disordered
speech was undertaken drew on contemporary understanding of child
development coupled with a knowledge of segmental phonetics. Assessments
were a two-fold attempt to describe how children's development of
speech sounds differed in relation to those of their peers and also how their
production of speech could be described using simple place, manner and
voicing parameters. There was in the earlier part of the century no interest
in the use children made of speech nor of the way their speech may have
reflected a wider linguistic incompetence.
