Vendors of hairstyling and makeup in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In Congo a man dressed as a woman to earn money for his family. He is not transgender he is just cross-dressing for a job. It is just his job to crossdress. Arobase -dressed as a woman- sells makeup and women’s clothes to women, who wonder if he is a woman or a man dressed as a woman. Other men call him gay or transgender, but he is not, he uses transvestism as a mean to make money. As a man dressing as a woman, he found an original way to make money. Being an African transvestite or dressing as a woman in Congo is a controversial thing to do, so it is not without danger. Arobase even wears makeup himself when dressing as a woman. This makes people sometimes think he is an African transgender or that he is gay. Also, he uses small rocks as fake nipples, he wears a dress and uses a pillow to make sure he has a big booty. People in Congo call him ‘auntie Flora’ and think it is very interesting that he presents himself in a traditional female role. A man selling makeup in Kinshasa is not a traditional male role at all. For everything he does, he makes fifty dollars a day. VPRO Metropolis correspondent Paul Shemisi from Congo followed him for a day to see how he makes a living dressed as a woman. Also, he discovers stereotypes about African transvestites.
