"New Delhi: The IIT Bombay has placed an order for 3,500 convocation robes made of khadi cotton, inculcating the feeling of nationalism in the students.
"After Gujarat University, now khadi has also made a niche in the hearts of authorities of premier Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay," the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises said in a statement.
They have placed an order for "3,500 uttarias or angavastrams" made of honey comb towel cotton khadi for use by students at the time of convocation, it said.
The institute has adopted khadi to inculcate feeling of nationalism in the students, IIT, Mumbai Director Devang Khakhar said."
As a premier institute which should be show casing cutting edge of Indian technology falling back on to empty gestures like this is a shame.
I would have expected some kind of nano tech material to be the show case of such a convocation.
M.K.Gandhi chose khadhi not because it was the cutting edge of textile technology it was the only textile technology which was still indigenous. but now we have the best technology in textiles. We need to inculcate the idea that it is Indian that is important not fundamentalist clinging to the past thinking of " good old days" in fact there was nothing good about old days
