Mysore wood inlay
The art of wood inlay pioneered at Mysore traces its origin to the beginning of the 19 century to Mirza Yusuf Ali family who is believed to have migrated to Srirangapatna from Persia. This delicate art involved ornamenting rosewood with ivory, bone, plastic or attractive combinations of woods of different natural colours against the dark background. With the ban on ivory the craftsmen now use deer horn, camel bones and plastic to provide for inlay work. These masterpieces with ornamentation consisting usually of geometrical scroll or floral patterns are available as panels, boxes and furniture articles.
