無勝髮褐; Wúshèng Fàhè Ajita Kesakambali अजित केशकंबली ఆజిత కేశ కంబళి My favourite Philosopher

Most people think that all Indians are spiritual and worship thousands of gods since time immemorial.

But it is interesting to note there were quite a few rationalists and  Atheists and hedonists in India. One  such was
無勝髮褐;  Wúshèng Fàhè Ajita Kesakambali  अजित केशकंबली ఆజిత కేశ కంబళి  My favourite Philosopher

"There is no such thing as alms or sacrifice or offering. There is neither fruit nor result of good or evil deeds...A human being is built up of four elements. When he dies the earthly in him returns and relapses to the earth, the fluid to the water, the heat to the fire, the wind to the air, and his faculties pass into space. The four bearers, on the bier as a fifth, take his dead body away; till they reach the burning ground, men utter forth eulogies, but there his bones are bleached, and his offerings end in ashes. It is a doctrine of fools, this talk of gifts. It is an empty lie, mere idle talk, when men say there is profit herein. Fools and wise alike, on the dissolution of the body, are cut off, annihilated, and after death they are not.[3]"

(based on the Buddhist text Sāmaññaphala Sutta1)
Śramaṇa
view (diṭṭhi)1
Amoralism: denies any reward or
punishment for either good or bad deeds.
Niyativāda (Fatalism): we are powerless;
suffering is pre-destined.
Ajita

with death, all is annihilated.
Sassatavada (Eternalism):
Matter, pleasure, pain and the soul are eternal and
do not interact.
Restraint: be endowed with, cleansed by

Agnosticism: "I don't think so. I don't think in that
way or otherwise. I don't think not or not not."
Suspension of judgement.

Like those of Lokayatins, nothing survives of Ajita's teachings in script,
Ajita Kesakambali
The most prominent materialist in ancient India was Ajita Kesakambali. The earliest reference to his school Of thought is in the Buddhas Discourse on the Fruits of Recluseship (samannaphala suttat) సామన్నాఫల సూత్తత His ideas are discussed along with those of five other heterodox teachers, including the leader of Jainism, who was a senior contemporary of the Buddha. The discourse focuses more on Ajita's denial of the efficacy of moral discourse than on his materialism. He was totally opposed to those who believed that anything other than matter exists. He refers to them as atthikavädin, or "existentialist". According to him, these existentialists recognized gen-erosity (däna ధాన, prayers (yittha యిత్త), rituals (hutaహుథ, the fruits of good and bad actions (kammaకర్మ), this world (idha lokaఇహ లొక ), the hereafter (para loka పరలొక), the concepts of mother and father (which introduce moral obligations in most societies), the belief in beings of spontaneous birth (i.e., gods, sattä opapätikäసతొపపాతిక), and even the claims that the ascetics and brahmans lived in harmony, were well behaved, and knew this world as well as the next.36 Ajita denied all these. Hence, he was looked upon as a nihilist (natthika- vädin నాస్తిక వాది). In many ways he compares well with the positivists of the modern world, who were reacting to the extremes in religious ideologies and social mores. Of course, Ajita needed an argument to justify his claims. This is where his materialism appears. His materialism was not the result of the study of the physical world and the laws that govern it, as is the case with modern science. Instead, his materialism was based upon his attempt to understand the human in the context of Brahmanical thought, with its extremist spiritualistic and social philosophy.
This human person consists of the four great elements. When he dies, the solidity returns to the body of earth, fluidity to the body of water, caloric to the body of heat, and viscosity to the body of air.37 Ajita is indeed aware that there is something within the human that cannot be explained in terms of the four primary' elements. He seems to have recognized a difference between dead matter and living cells, a fact that some modern scientists, such as Barry Commoner, would admit.38 He needed an explanation that would not upset his materialist thesis, hence his statement, "The faculties return to space" (äkäsat!i indriyäni samkamanti). 39 After this analysis of the human, Ajita returns to his main thesis: Ideas like generosity are simply the conceptualizations of a stupid person (dattu-pafifiatti). He who speaks of their existence, his words are empty, confused and a cry of desperation (tesal!l tucchal!i musä viläpo ye keci atthikavädat!l vadanti).
His first name, Ajita, means the "unconquered," and the second, Kesa- kambali, implies "one who wears a robe of "human" hair./థిస్ ఇస్ సొమె పెఒప్లె ఎక్ష్ప్రెస్సిఒన్  వ్హెరె అస్  కమ్బలి మెఅన్స్ అ బ్లంకెత్ ఇన్  దయ్ తొ దయ్ లంగుఅగె  ఇన్ ఈన్దిఅ " The latter indicates that he was a practitioner of austerities. This means that, while being an ascetic, which would also mean that he was not a materialist 18 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND PROBLEMS given to pleasures of sense, Ajita was simply condemning the metaphysical foundations of the Brahmanical ( थिसthis is another western interpretation)  moral theory predominant at this time. In fact, views are not very different from those of some of the
given to pleasures of sense, Ajita was simply condemning the metaphysical foundations of the Brahmanical moral theory predominant at this time. In fact, Ajitas views are not very different from those of some of the modern-day philosophers of science who by any standard could be considered good people but who advocate materialism primarily because of the metaphysics involved in ethical discourse. Like the latter, Ajita seems to have been very argumentative, hence his name, "the unconquered."

 Pürava Kassapa
Pürapa Kassapa, whose ideas resemble those of Ajita, denied the accruing of merit (punniya) or demerit (päpa) on the basis of good or bad actions, respectively. According to him, taking life, stealing, unchastity, or lying does not bring about demerit.
There would be no accumulation of demerit if one were to reduce all the living beings on this earth to a pile of flesh.
If one were to walk the southern bank of the river Ganges, killing whatever beings one came across, one would not accumulate any demerit. Similarly, if one were to traverse the northern bank, practising charity or praying and promoting others to do the same, one would not pile up any merit. Charity, self-control, restraint, and truthfulness are ineffective. Unlike Ajita, Püraqa provides no reasons or a metaphysical position to justify such condemnation. The only clue to an understanding of his amoralism is his use of the terms merit and demerit It may be noted that the Buddha, who came after Püraoa, made a distinction between merit and demerit on the one hand, and good (kusala) and bad (akusala) on the other. For the sake of the unenlightened, he allowed the idea that merit and demerit can be accumulated. However, the enlightened one, he maintained, is one who has renounced the ideas of merit and demerit although not the concepts of good and bad. Promoting good (kusalassa upasampadü) was part of the ultimate teachings of the Buddha.
It is clear that the Buddha allowed the concepts of merit and demerit only as incentives for the unenlightened person to adopt a moral life.
But the idea of accumulation was not one that could eventually lead to freedomfrom bondage. As the Buddhist text reports, Pürana did not make this distinction. As such, his interest seems to be in totally condemning the Brahmanical and Jaina notions of accumulation of merit for salvific(leading to salvation) purposes and then offering no alternative. Furthermore, it may be noted that Pürapa used the term kiriya instead of kamma to refer to action, and this term was the one employed by the Jainas.

Pakudha Kaccäyana Pakudha Kaccäyana's amoralism is different from both Ajitas and Pürana's. The thrust of his argument is in the direction of denying a "person," again prompted by the Brahmanical conception of self. Yet his denial of self is not comparable to that of Ajita, who reduced the human to the five material substances. Pakudha speaks of seven substances: the four material elements, happiness (sukha), pain (dukkha), and the life principle (jiva).43 His is more an essentialist enterprise that recognizes irreducible elements, both physical and psychic. He is an amoralist because he takes the elements to be permanent, eternal, uncreated, and noncreative. Therefore, "even if one were to behead a person, one is not depriving that person of his life, but is simply creating some space between the seven elements with a life."44 Makkhali Gosäla, the leader of the band of wandering ascetics called Äjivikas, is philosophically the most sophisticated among these amoralists. He presented a carefully worked out theory of biological determinism that, to some extent, influenced the Jainas. Makkhali believed that beings are conditioned by three factors only: fate (niyati), species (sangati), and self-nature (bhäva = svabhäva).45 The initial condition that determines how and why a living being comes to belong to any specific species remains a mystery. It is simply predetermination. Once it appears in a particular species, a species being a harmonious concomitance of a group of characteristics, then it behaves according to the nature of that species. Makkhali's primary interest is in denying the efficacy of the will. Interestingly, he does not reject the concepts of purity (visuddhi) or impurity (satpkilesa). He simply does not want to recognize the activity of the self (atta-kära) or the activity of the human (purisa-kära) in the attainment of purity or impurity. But to what does purity and impurity belong? It seems that they are part and parcel of the mysterious conditions that determine the life of beings; they are part of Hence, beings continue to evolve in the cycle of existences (samsära) and, after some incalculable
period of time, automatically reach the end of their suffering. The idea that virtues and rituals, austerities and the moral life could bring about a change in one's life or bring to fruition the latent karmic tendencies was not acceptable to Makkhali.46 Here again we find a member of the ascetic tradition unwilling to recognize two metaphysical views associated with ethical discussions, namely, the concept of the will and the idea of potentiality. Yet he did not abandon the age-old distinction between the transcendental and the phenomenal, the celestial and the terrestrial, for predermination, species, and self-nature, as well as purity and impurity, are part of the transcendental or the celestial, while the being itself, the content is phenomenal or terrestrial. It is not surprising that the later Indian theistic philosophers utilized Makkhali's system of thinking to introduce the concept of God (iSvara).

Mellow Yellow versus the bright blue Shimmer

Mellow Yellow versus the bright blue Shimmer

The story of my right eye cataract surgery.

The narration of a doctor’s experience with cataract surgery.

I was born in 1956 started wearing glasses in the third year of my MB BS.
I never had proper eye examination. in the Ophthalmology book There Was an explanation about astigmatism and even when I was looking at it still did not realize that I have bad
astigmatism. of course because I used to sit in the front benches I was not very much aware that I have myopia.
so from 1976 to 2017 I have been reading spectacles/ corrective glasses. ritual change from time to time as my   vision slowly  worsened.
When I went to see my opthamologist in 2015 in the town of Del Rio Texas after examination he informed me that my right eye cataract is pretty mature and that I should undergo cataract surgery.
Although I am an internal medicine physician and a former General and pediatric surgeon My knowledge of Ophthalmology was pretty dated. although I was aware of the number of development and improvements in Ophthalmology  in general and particularly in the treatment of cataract and the development of sophisticated intraocular lenses which Can correct both astigmatism and myopia  or hypermetropia at the same time.
I also experienced for the first time  OCT Ocular coherence tomography.
“Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) has become a most useful imaging test for diagnosing, treating and monitoring retinal diseases, as it provides a virtual “optical biopsy” of the macula (Figure 1). This noninvasive imaging technique produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina, anterior segment, optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer. OCT employs low-coherence interferometry of near-infrared light to acquire views of the eye, which resemble histological sections.”

Figure 1

But YouTube where is unforeseen circumstances I could not get this surgery done at the time and I moved over to another small town called Big Spring where are after about 18 months I was finding it more and more difficult to do my computer reading and also on one occasion had significant difficulty driving at night.
I consider myself a very visual man. I enjoy reading almost continuously and would read anything and everything which has printed are written matter on it. if there is a moving picture in my visual field my attention automatically goes to back that picture,Even if someone is next to me sitting and talking.  Once something attracts my attention I have a tendency to keep staring at it. due to all these things I have gotten into trouble  any number of times.
so much sure if my wife wants to talk to me something serious I have to switch off all the monitors and TVs and cover-up all the magazines and books in the We vicinity.I am so much dependent anyway  addicted to the visual stimuli that I would rather die than  lose my vision. But this vision was slowly slipping away especially from my right eye so I had to make up my mind and ( go 4/Gopher,;-) Google Talk blooper) go for cataract surgery.
Big Spring is a very small town with only one ophthalmic surgeon visiting once a month from nearby Midland Texas. his name is Dr. Harshad Shah  originally from Mumbai Who  is working in Midland for the last 30 years. at 10/a thin small belt/built Indian gentleman  with Extraordinary energy and a very kind manner.
Immediately informed me after examination that I need to undergo cataract surgery. And that I have cataract Formation in both eyes end it is up to me to decide which one I wanted to get (off right to the phone)  operated upon  at first. So I decided to get my right eye operated first.

After going through all the pros and cons simple intraocular lenses 2 the most sophisticated (Cox office ticket at once)  ones. I decided to go for a simple intraocular lens without any Astigmatism or bifocal correction. the logic and rationale behind this decision was as follows.

In spite of great faith in modern technology I'm not having great faith in every human being so much so that I cannot fully depend on someone making a custom lens for me and not screwing up something. this is not like having spectacles if something does not work then I will have to go back for surgery which I did not want to do.
the insurance company paste/ pays only for The ordinary sample intraocular lens. so I will be saving about $2,500 each  I/eye.

I also have significant drooping of the eyelids which are somewhat covered by my glasses and my wife felt that I would look even worse without glasses!.

So it was decided that I will be operated upon 12/ 18/ 2017 at 7 a.m.

I was asked to come by for a preoperative check up on the 14th of December.
I think I might have suffered from a little bit of V I P syndrome, because no one even took my blood pressure before the day of surgery. and I was surprised to find my blood pressure running 150 / 110 on the morning of surgery.

As my wife also has cataracts which need surgery she was not driving for some  months. as we are living by ourselves we were in a dilemma how to get to Midland at 7 a.m. and come back in the evening. the taxi services are not good and already cost me they charge about $200 for a single trip from Big Spring to Midland. so we decided to Go to Midland on the 11th night. local taxi for the short trip from the hotel to the hospital and to  Dr. Harshad Shah’s Clinic.

Although I was trying to act like it was nothing in order not to freak my wife in my heart of hearts I was terrified of the possible complications and the remote possibility of losing vision in my right eye altogether.I had a small bowl of kung pao chicken and fried rice in Panda Express and went to sleep
the alarm rang at 6 in the morning we both got up I took my shower using the chlorhexidine body wash the preoperative nurse had given me.( I will write some other time about the research I did about this, being a surgeon myself).

the  taxi  ( Medissa taxi service) which we arranged the previous night(all right/ )arrived right on time

and we'd  Reached Midland Memorial Hospital At about 6:45 As usual I was put into the infamous hospital gown with my bare bottom freezing into one of the pre operating rooms.

then we have the usual hurry up and wait experiences which are  very common in a hospital   environment (end warniment and more on rent more, Google bloopers)
Finally after stating my name  and date of birth at least 6 times an RN came by to put about 5 different eye drops into my right eye every 15 minutes for almost 2 hours. during all this time I was feeling hungry thirsty and  my bladder was full and was killing me. the RN was kind enough to put the IV bag on a pole so that I could drag it into the bathroom to relieve myself.

then at about 10 o'clock An extra cheering transporter came by to push my trolley along with me into the anesthesia  preoperative waiting room. where I had to answer a number of questions from the anesthetist who also checked my  Mouth to determine it is adequate for incubation if necessary.
then I explained about the short General anesthesia using Propofol which should last a very short time in order to enable Dr. Shah To perform (a durable barMore Google bloopers) retrobulbar block.
Dr. Shah came to see me and to give me a few encouraging words and also to mark my right eye with an indelible ink pen( prank/ pain/ pain).
once I  (scooter down/GB )scooted on to the operating table the start was kind and considerate to cover me up with to warm blankets. the poor lady anesthetist Banged (and the statistic Bank  GB)her
head on  the operating microscope while trying to keep me comfortable.

Then there was not dramatic counting backwards of numbers like they show in the movies. all I felt was a severe burning pain( just a twinge according to the anesthetist) in my right arm where the IV was going in. although I was not aware of what exactly happened after the injection it felt like there was no gap between the Burning in the arm and feeling the swab starting to clean my eye region.
by the time I was getting used to this my face was completely covered up by the  surgical drapes.
all I could see was a bright light in my right eye and the (fathom GB/) pattern of the drapes with my left eye.
this is when I first made the wonderful discovery that I could mentally switch The( William/Region region GB) vision from the left eye to the right eye. which was a unique experience.
all I could make out was some instruments moving around in my right eye at one time I could make out the (de-facto  feco  Seiko GB) Phaco emulsifier  slowly sucking up the white jelly like substance Like somebody is scraping off a piece of pie from my glasses.
soon after this I had a very disturbing feeling of complete blindness in the right eye I was trying to involuntarily blink and squint with my right eye to see better as this had become a regular habit of me for the last 2 years but trying was useless and I could not do anything and I was( to clean/GB) strictly told by the surgeon not to make any sudden movements.
this feeling  (last turd GB/)lasted for about just about a minute. then the intraocular lens was injected And(a jester I just stood ,adjuster GB) adjusted. and I could   (Wrigley/ Wrigley GB) vaguely make out
the face of the surgeon. but immediately after that my I was covered up and I heard Dr. Shaw saying
“ your surgery is over and you did very well”

immediately I was moved back into the holding area and my wife joined me. I was able to get a sip of
bad tasting Hospital coffee which felt quite good.

after waiting about an hour we were on our way to the hotel (   rare GB/)where we had our lunch and took a nap for about an hour and a half. Then it was time to go back to Doctor shah’s clinic for a post-operative check up. After the bandage was removed he asked me to read The chart and all I could see was a big  white circle. as I was panicking  he changed
the chart and I was able to read the Top Line correctly and the bottom line partly.
after this he put some drops in my eye and also added a lubricant antibiotic ointment and( pack back GB) patched my I back again but this time only with a piece of gauze and paper tape.
we(rent GB)went back to the hotel. till then I did not have any pain. but that night I had to take a few Tylenols to help with the pain.

next day morning I took off the patch and I was able to see some parts of my hotel room as if I was staring through  (tickling GB) thickly frosted glass.
So in fact I made the drive from Midland to Big Spring almost with vision in one eye. but even the minimal Vision in the right eye was helping  with depth perception.

The next day we had to go through with the ritual of putting the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops in my right eye every 4 hours with a can/ten minute gap between the drops.

I'm thirsty, blah blah blah grass tomorrow.
on Thursday I was able to see clearly through my right eye. the light was so bright and blue that it was hurting my eye. so I started wearing my old( Lincoln/ Ginger/ classes GB)Tinted glasses.

for the last three days I have also been noticing constant flickering a flight/ of light And the outer edge of my right eye. which is given the scientific name of Dysphotopsia, this becomes worse when (i-ReadyGB) a very  bright light shines from the side into my right eye.
this is much less  when I use dim lighting and also cover right side of my glasses.

the difference between the colors when I look from the right IR/ IR/ I/ Right eye Starbright and blue white.
the same picture when I close my right eye is Mellow Yellow.

I am going to see Dr. Shaw on 27th for a post-operative check up.

I still need the time I left cataract operated.
hoping to let you guys know how it goes.
all in all I feel it was worth the trouble.

Mothers of all future Ohio's Down syndrome children probably you can send them to Paul Daugherty, pdaugherty@enquirer.com

, pdaugherty@enquirer.com
An advocate of the present Ohio bill whohad the ultimate joy in taking care of  a downs  child.
should be a  resource for all future  mothers of  Down's syndrome children

"I also think this:
A woman’s right to choose is fundamental. This is the hottest of hot-button issues, I know. It’s not dinner conversation. I respect that. I don’t pass judgment. There is also the question of exclusivity. Why does Down syndrome get a break, and not another physical or intellectual disability? I’m grateful, certainly. But why limit the bill’s scope?
I think, too, that elected officials can do better with the day-to-day things we face: Health care access, meaningful employment and independence, among others.
I think this should not become merely a rallying cry for anti-abortion activists.
That’s all the stuff I think. Here is what I know:
The world is a better place with Jillian in it. She is an example of our better selves. My mother once said to me, “Jillian is who the rest of us should be, but aren’t.” I can’t think of a better description.
Jillian isn’t unique. She is “special” only in the way we think all our kids are special. She comes with her own flaws and talents, same as the rest of us. Her innate gifts involve spectacular shows of the heart. We are perfectly blessed that she is family, and we get to know her.
The bill, if passed, will face tough sledding. The ACLU won’t love it. Similar laws in Indiana and Louisiana have been blocked by the courts. (One, in North Dakota, has not.)
So we’ll see what happens.
If only everyone could experience our joy. This wouldn’t be much of a debate then, would it?"

Longest known frozen human embryo to result in a successful birth, one more step toward Interstellar travel
(CNN)The longest known frozen human embryo to result in a successful birth was born last month in Tennessee.
Emma Wren Gibson, delivered November 25 by Dr Jeffrey Keenan, medical director of the National Embryo Donation Center, is the result of an embryo originally frozen on October 14, 1992.
Emma's parents, Tina and Benjamin Gibson of eastern Tennessee, admit feeling surprised when they were told the exact age of the embryo thawed March 13 by Carol Sommerfelt, embryology lab director at the National Embryo Donation Center.
"Do you realize I'm only 25? This embryo and I could have been best friends," Tina Gibson said.
Today, Tina, now 26, explained to CNN, "I just wanted a baby. I don't care if it's a world record or not."
