Lest we forget
various episodes and lessons to be learned from the history of India's conmen, scam stars, frauds.
There is a great amount of space and time spent on the latest big time bank defaulter vijay mallya
a few days ago I had written in my blog about Agri Gold scam in Andhra Pradesh.
There are a few good Samaritans who are trying to write in their blogs about such corporate scams but looks like people never learned the lessons. So I talked I should start a series or publish a pamphlet or a book listing and describing the various big time bank defaulters in India since independence and also make people aware how their money is being misused by the so-called public sector banks, the politicians and businessmen nexus

the sad thing is the media attention seems to be more to make these scoundrels into hero figures and give them maximum publicity. For example the about webpage instead of writing a detailed article on the list of defaulters gives you a slideshow which is more like free advertisement for these defaulters and also defaulting companies.
First and foremost the media needs to stop doing this.

Even a big-time and very popular South Indian English language newspaper Corporation is one of the major defaulters.
As per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs record, Prabodh Kumar Tewari and Anand Kumar Tiwari are directors of the company.

Mundhra financial scandal
"Haridas Mundhra (Hindiहरिदास मूंदड़ा) was a Calcutta-based industrialist and stock speculator who was found guilty and imprisoned in the first big financial scandal of free India in the 1950s. The Mundhra scandal exposed the rifts between the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his son-in-law Feroze Gandhi, and also led to the resignation of India's then finance minister T. T. Krishnamachari."
From India abroad
T.T. Krishnamachari, the Finance Minister under whose nose the scandal exploded went scot free.

V.K. Krishna Menon did not go to prison for his alleged involvement in the infamous Jeep Scandal, the first case of political corruption in free India. Instead, Menon went to New York, as India's representative to the United Nations.
HAWALA scam

Accusations of P.V. Narasimha Rao's involvement in the state lottery scandal

"In Indian politics, crime and punishment are seldom cause and effect. Despite the vast canvas of the bribery scam and its reverberations across the country, it is difficult to imagine that anyone named by the CBI will ever be proven guilty or prosecuted. Sure, there will be a popular outrage, and corruption will be denuciated from ever political pulpit But in the end, the hawala scandal, like many such cases before, is likely to be remembered as just another "good story" in the Indian press. After all, this is not the first time that the high and mighty have been involved in a mega scam"

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy merely resigned as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh when the Supreme Court passed strictures against him for his involvement in the bus route nationalization scandal. He then moved to New Delhi to become a Cabinet Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, and Finally, President of India.

Kuo oil deal, the Bofors kickbacks controversy, the HWD submarine case, and the Harshad Mehta affair, the life span of the hawala scandal too will be short with no political or legal accountability. Even the securities scam

The political rehabilitation of A.R. Antulay, who was forced to resign from the chief ministership of Maharashtra in the early 1980s on charges of misappropriation of funds, clearly shows that deliverance will come, even if on occasions it takes a while The Kashmiri Link in the Bribery Scandal

Nayar, KuldipIndia Abroad [New York, N.Y] 16 Feb
 1996: 2.

One Ishfaque Hussain Lone of Srinagar, known as "deputy chief of intelligence" of the Hizbul Mujahideen, a militant group in Kashmir, was trapped in Delhi on March 25, 1991, after police were tipped off. Twenty-three bank drafts drawn in favor of 22 persons - payable at Jammu and Kashmir bank branches - and cash amounting to Rs. 1.6 million (about $46,000) was recovered from him. The startling information was that he was allegedly the conduit for money to various militant organizations. Three letters found with him revealed plans to increase militancy in Kashmir.
Sharma's arrest led to the custody of four more persons: Moolchand Sampatraj Shah, Mohammed Shahid, Rais Anwar and Nand Kishore. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has by that time taken charge of the case, opposed the bail of all the five. Yet the court let them off. The government then detained them under the Terrorist and Distruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). They are the ones who blurted out the information which led to the raids on the premises of Surinder Jain, his cousin and his manager, Jamender Jain. Two diaries and two notebooks were seized from one place. Those documents have turned out to be most revealing.
Everyone is surprised how the name of V.C. Shukla came to be included because he is among the most loyal to Rao. This was probably done to counter the charge that Rao had not initiated action against his own men. While implementing the Kamaraj plan for cleansing politics in 1962, Jawaharlal Nehru changed most Cabinet ministers and chief ministers. He also dropped his favorite, Lal Bahadur Shastri, to give the impression that he was making no distinction. It is clear that those who passed on money to the Indian politicians were financing militants in Kashmir as well. This suggests some sort of link. It provides the nation with sufficient evidence that the funding of militants and of the leading politicians was from the same source. This has serious ramifications. The very thought is disturbing. Since all those who made confessions are behind bars under TADA, any further information is not possible.

Pathological Genorosity, altruism as disguised selfishness and other Musings

A teenager’s suicide attempt is misattributed to problems of the heart, adolescent crisis or substance abuse; promiscuous behavior is blamed on childhood “sexual abuse.” Bipolar patients from time to time describe their parents as “monsters” or “emotionally abusive,” which some psychotherapists accept on blind faith without ever talking to the parents. Bipolar II patients are often diagnosed as unipolar and/or borderline personality (Akiskal, 2004), treated with antidepressants without mood stabilizers, resulting in tragic aggravation of the course of the illness (Akiskal and Mallya, 1987; Akiskal et al., 2005a). Excessive spending, squandering, of one’s economic resources and pathological generosity may lead to financial ruin before bipolarity is considered.

Pathological generosity: an atypical impulse control disorder after a left subcortical stroke.

Abstract

Changes in socio-emotional behavior and conduct, which are characteristic symptoms of frontal lobe damage, have less often been described in patients with focal subcortical injuries. We report on a case of pathological generosity secondary to a left lenticulocapsular stroke with hypoperfusion of several anatomically intact cortical areas. A 49-year-old man developed excessive and persistent generosity as he recovered from a left lenticulocapsular hematoma. His symptoms resembled an impulse control disorder. (99m)Tc-HMPAO SPECT demonstrated hypoperfusion mostly in the ipsilateral striatum, dorsolateral, and orbitofrontal cortex. This case study adds pathological generosity to the range of behavioral changes that may result from discrete unilateral lesions of the lenticular nucleus and nearby pathways. In our particular case, post-stroke pathological generosity was not ascribable to disinhibition, apathy, mania, or depression. Because pathological generosity may lead to significant distress and financial burden upon patients and their families, it may warrant further consideration as a potential type of impulse control disorder.

Man’s Stroke Leads To ‘Pathological Generosity’

The history of neuroscience is littered with patients whose behavior changed in bizarre ways after they suffered brain damage. Some people could no longer recognize animals, or couldn’t speak but could still sing. For neuroscientists, these cases offer opportunities: by studying how people’s behaviors change after brain injuries, they gain insight into what role the injured areas play in everyday tasks. And so it was with João—researchers hoped that his compulsive giving could shed light on normal generosity, helping them understand why human beings give and why, biologically, giving feels good.

Explaining generosity is a headache for biologists; Charles Darwin considered the trait one of the gravest threats to his theory of natural selection.

Giving, it seems, might become compulsive in some people because they crave the rush of dopamine that accompanies it.

Kin selection explains altruism as disguised selfishness: I might sacrifice my well-being in the short term, but helping my siblings survive will ultimately boost the chances of my genes being carried on in the future.

“Generosity may be a burden to those who love us,” he says.
Mohandas Karamchand  Gandhi and the  treatment his family members  got from  him

As the editors of the Science Daily put it,“…‘joy of giving’ has an anatomical basis in the brain – surprisingly, one that is shared with selfish longings and rewards.”

HIV guidelines No brainer

HIV guidelines No brainer

It is a nobrainer that in Medicine any infection dealt with in it's earliest stages will have the best results.

It took  many experts and  trials and many tears to come to this conclusion for  HIV!
"
Following are the updated recommendations in this section: • ART is recommended for all HIV-infected individuals, regardless of CD4 cell count, to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV infection (AI). • ART is also recommended for HIV-infected individuals to prevent HIV transmission (AI). • When initiating ART, it is important to educate patients on the benefits and considerations regarding ART, and to address strategies to optimize adherence. On a case-by-case basis, ART may be deferred because of clinical and/or psychosocial factors, but therapy should be initiated as soon as possible. Acute and Recent (Early) HIV Infection The recommendation for initiation of ART in patients diagnosed with acute and recent infection has been strengthened. The changes are highlighted below: Original Recommendation: • “Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for all individuals with HIV-1 infection and should be offered to those with early HIV-1 infection (BII).” Updated Recommendation: • “Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for all individuals with HIV-1 infection (AI) including those with early HIV-1 infection.” HIV-Infected Adolescents and Young Adults Following are two key updates to this section: • The Panel noted that although the START and TEMPRANO study populations did not include adolescents, the recommendation to treat all HIV patients has been extrapolated to adolescents based on the expectation that they will derive benefits from early ART similar to those observed in adults"

" Go-DAddy" "1&1"website domain auto renewal contract need for extreme caution.this seems to be more like a protection racket

Beware of website hosting and domain auto renewal contract
Need for  extreme caution.this seems to be  more like a protection racket
In this day and age everybody is interested in having a domain name or website even the free blog sites tempt you with the ability to have a distinct personal web domain. And the offers in the beginning are pretty cheap and it's very easy for us to fall into this temptation of having our own domain name.
I have in the past registered a number of domain names whenever I talked about starting a new business but later on most of these ideas fizzle out. But one forgets to follow through and go back to the domain registration and website hosting companies to cancel our accounts. Even when we cancel them they usually do not provide us with a confirmation number or a confirmation email. Sometimes these emails get into your spam folder and get deleted when you delete all your spam mail.
Although the amounts may be small $15-$20 if you have more than one domain or a website it adds up and becomes a large amount over time.
It especially important that these loose ends are tied when things are going well for you or before you are in financial dire straits. For example for the last two months my income has been zero. And I get slammed with an invoice from a website hosting company for a domain name which are registered with them three years ago. I distinctly remember calling the company and telling them to discontinue all services. And today I got an email saying that they were not able to process my credit card for a domain name registration. Any other day I would've reflexively paid this amount but this time I spent almost an hour on the phone talking to customer service and the cancellation department (it's funny that the customer service center cannot do the cancellation using the same computer system)
as I did have some substance in my contention they canceled my services and promised me that they will send an email and also cancel the invoice. I am going to carefully look at my spam folder for the next few days to see that this email as and when it comes is not deleted.
So all you ordinary people out there who are dreaming of starting companies, businesses and registering domain names and website hosting services. Pay attention to the small print (I know it is boring and difficult to make any changes) and make sure that you cancel your subscriptions to any website or domain hosting accounts as soon as you think that you are not going to be of any more used to you.
Hopefully you will not get calls from collecting agencies and spoil your credit rating so that you can think about the next paradigm shifting business idea.

Edifying Thoughts of a Tobacco Smoker, by Johann Sebastian Bach

One of the English translations
Most of us know Bach as a music composer.  But he also wrote some verse, including the following intriguing one, where he explains how smoking his pipe makes him contemplate higher things (other Christians have said similar things, BTW; e.g. see here (HT: CL) ):

Whene’er I take my pipe and stuff it

And smoke to pass the time away

My thoughts, as I sit there and puff it,

Dwell on a picture sad and grey:

It teaches me that very like

Am I myself unto my pipe.

Like me this pipe, so fragrant burning,

Is made of naught but earthen clay;

To earth I too shall be returning,

And cannot halt my slow decay.

My well used pipe, now cracked and broken,

Of mortal life is but a token.

No stain, the pipe’s hue yet doth darken;

It remains white. Thus do I know

That when to death’s call I must harken

My body, too, all pale will grow.

To black beneath the sod ’twill turn,

Likewise the pipe, if oft it burn.

Or when the pipe is fairly glowing,

Behold then instantaneously,

The smoke off into thin air going,

‘Til naught but ash is left to see.

Man’s fame likewise away will burn

And unto dust his body turn.

How oft it happens when one’s smoking,

The tamper’s missing from it’s shelf,

And one goes with one’s finger poking

Into the bowl and burns oneself.

If in the pipe such pain doth dwell

How hot must be the pains of Hell!

Thus o’er my pipe in contemplation

Of such things – I can constantly

Indulge in fruitful meditation,

And so, puffing contentedly,

On land, at sea, at home, abroad,

I smoke my pipe and worship God.

(Note: slightly different version from the one I posted in the comments on another post; I presume translation from the German has produced some different English versions.)

Genius Douglas Hafstadter book godel eschar and bach has the following sentence which is missing "concepts and combining"

to synthesize new concepts by taking old------------------ them together in new ways; to come up with ideas which are novel.
