about an year or two ago a young lady who was a dancer had visited the temple of konark.
she was quite excited about the architecture and sculpture and did not believe when I was trying to tell her that what is remaining of the original konark Sun Temple temple.is less than half of the original temple complex.
Most people who resume this Temple do not have any idea the temple is actually destroyed and only the dancing Hall remains and even this was completely filled with mud and sand in order to prevent it from collapsing on itself during the the time line British ruling India.
some details from wikipedia
As it was before it was filled up with sand, stone&mud
here is the link to zoomable image
this picture of the puri temple gives us an idea about how the original structure was like
Here I am unable to understand how about 3/4 of the main temple has fallen but still the rest of the structure was still standing
What happened to all those fallen remains?
I strongl;y suspect the local Panda's no longe were worshipping sun god so no people no money, consequently no one cared.
