Punjab train accident: How the Amritsar tragedy unfolded TNN I Oct 21, 2018, 09:211ST

1. WRONG PLACE: To catch a glimpse of the fireworks, many took up spots outside the 1.5-acre ground. They assembled on top of houses around it and even on the railway tracks on the other side

2. WRONG TIME: The main event began around 6.15pm, after former minister Navjot Kaur Sidhu arrived at the venue. She was among the dignataries who spoke till 6.40pm when dusk had fallen.

 3. SEPARATION WALL: As a 12-foot-tall wall separates the ground and the railway tracks, some people moved away from the ground and towards the railway tracks to get a better view of the fireworks.

 4. LED SCREEN: To attract more people to the venue, organisers had installed a giant LED screen on the boundary wall, facing the rail tracks. Nearly 400 people had  gathered around it outside the wall

 5. FIREWORKS: As organisers set on fire the 25-foot Ravan effigy around 6.50pm, loud fireworks scared the crowd into moving further away from the boundary wall and towards the tracks. Most of them ended up standing on the tracks.

 6. TRAIN ARRIVES: Fireworks drowned out sound of Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU, which was moving at 91km/hr ( and  the stupid people   sit on the track demanding  arrest of the train driver) and mowed down people on tracks. Gateman at crossing 400m before accident site allowed train to pass, unaware of crowd on tracks. Some who escaped ended up on the adjacent track and got caught in a stampede.
